Top tips for healthy teeth
Make your oral health a priority this year.
Taking care of your oral health is key when it comes to enjoying overall wellness. We all know how important it is to practice good oral hygiene habits, but there are a number of other ways you can keep your teeth and gums in optimal condition. Read on to find out how you can keep your smile looking and feeling great…
Replace your toothbrush regularly
Brushing your teeth twice a day should be part of your routine. In fact, it’s important that you brush for at least two minutes each time. Over time, the bristles of your toothbrush may fray and wear so it’s a good idea to get a replacement every few months — manual toothbrushes should ideally be replaced every three months or so, while electric toothbrush heads vary according to the brand you use. If you’re not sure about the condition of your toothbrush or which type to choose, chat to your dentist for more information.
Limit stain-causing foods
There are a number of foods and drinks that can cause stains and discolouration on the surface of the teeth. These include dark berries like blueberries, cranberries and blackberries; highly pigmented fruits like pomegranates; coffee, tea, wine and soda; and dark sauces like soy. If you do enjoy any of these foods and drinks, it’s best to brush your teeth after consuming them. You can also minimise stains by snacking on crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, and celery — these foods promote the production of saliva in the mouth and help to keep the teeth clean.
Don’t forget about your tongue
It goes without saying that you should keep your teeth clean, but did you know that you should also brush your tongue? Try and remember to brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth. This will help to remove unwanted bacteria and keep your breath smelling fresh. If you prefer, it’s possible to clean your tongue with a specially designed tongue scraper instead of your toothbrush.
Don’t skip dental appointments
One of the best things you can do for your oral health is to see your dentist on a regular basis. Try and schedule routine check-up and cleans every six months so that your dentist can identify and treat any issues at an early stage. If you feel anxious about dental appointments, don’t be afraid to discuss your concerns with your dentist. There are a number of sedation options available, and thanks to advancements in modern dentistry, there are now a range of virtually pain-free treatments on offer.
